Althought the evidense is still forming, lack of vitamin D is thought to produce cognetive or behavioral consequences, as studied on both animal and human trials. Dr. Michael Holick, a leading US expert from Boston University School of Medicine, called for current recommendations of 200 IU per day for children and adults up to 50 years of age for vitamin D need to be increased to 800 - 1000 IU vitamin D3 (New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 357, pp. 266-281).

SATURDAY, March 8 (HealthDay News) — Yoga helps ease hot flashes and other menopausal 
symptoms in breast cancer survivors, a U.S. study says.
Some of the 37 women who’d had early stage breast cancer took part in an eight-week “Yoga of Awareness” program, while others were assigned to a control group. All the women self-reported their menopausal symptoms before, immediately after, and three months after the program.
The yoga program used in this study is specifically designed to address menopausal symptoms through gentle stretching postures, breathing exercises, meditation techniques, group discussions and study of yoga principles.
“This program is not what you’d find at your local fitness center,” study co-author Laura Porter, an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University Medical Center, said in a prepared statement. ” ‘Yoga of Awareness’ is based on traditional yoga techniques that go beyond the teaching of specific postures to incorporate practices aimed at reducing stress and creating a heightened sense of awareness and acceptance about one’s physical and mental state.”

FDA Warns Against Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy
WEDNESDAY, Jan. 9 (HealthDay News) — U.S. health officials warned Wednesday about so called “bio-identical hormone replacement therapy” (BHRT) drugs, an increasing popular alternative therapy among women with menopausal symptoms.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials said they’ve sent warning letters to seven pharmacies, most of them Internet-based, saying that claims touting the benefits of BHRT compounds aren’t supported by medical evidence.
“FDA has issued warning letters to seven pharmacies that make false and misleading claims about their hormone therapy drugs and compound drugs containing estriol,” Deborah M. Autor, director of the FDA’s Office of Compliance in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said during a Wednesday afternoon teleconference.
The FDA said the seven pharmacies improperly claim that their drugs, containing hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and estriol, are better than the agency’s approved menopausal hormone therapy drugs and can prevent diseases such as Alzheimer’s, stroke and cancers.
